What is the difference between overdrive and drive in ford cars? When should you use them?

We've just always drove the car in overdrive. I'm afraid of what will happen if we don't.

only use drive for towing .i was told to always keep in overdrive b/c it saves on gas

You are correct in doing your normal driving with the car in overdrive. Drive, and 2, and 1 are lower gears. You would put the car in drive if you were towing something and not going above around 45 mph. You can also use the lower gears when going down steep grades……..it keeps you from having to use your brakes so much. Also, when driving in wet, and slippery conditions, slowing down and putting the car into a lower gear is safer.
