Can you swap a transmission between 2 same year chevy cars?

My girlfriends car transmission recently went out, and my old car that somehow had a tree fall on it, is just sitting in the backyard with a good transmission and engine and everything. So i was wondering would it work to put the transmission from my 2000 chevrolet malibu, into her 2000 chevrolet impala?

This may not be a smart question, but im not much of a mechanic. So any intelligent answers are welcome.

Both cars with the same engine? If they are the same engine then I cannot imagine that they will not work. I would search online for rebuilt transmissions and see if their catalogs show the same part. Also, wrecking yards can use an interchange guide and tell you what will interchange between the cars.

The transmissions should have an ID tag on them usually attached to the Bell Housing. If the numbers match then the trannys should swap with no problems.

No, I’m pretty sure they’re different transmissions. I forget what trans the Malibu has but I don’t think it’s the 4T65-E trans like the Impala has. Neither car shares the same motor either for the people suggesting that if they both have the same motor the transmissions will be the same.

This shouldn’t be a problem especially if both have same model tranny/ check shape and bolt pattern sof both… if they’re the same , no problem……..but from your comment , do not do this your self
