question about AFQT score on the ASVAB…?

If the automotive repair/maintenance and general science sections are not part of your AFQT score, why do you need to take these sub-tests then? I heard that they don’t count for your AFQT…so what DO they count for?

The various subtests of the ASVAB are combined and have a conversion score applied to them. The resultant scores are used to qualify you for or disqualify you from the different jobs offered by the services.

The AFQT is just used to determine if you can enlist or not.

The 9 sub test on the asvab are combined in different ways depending on service branch.

To give you line scores.

Example. The Air Force has

Mechanical
Electronic
Administrative
General

It is those line scores that determine what jobs you qualify for.

The AFQT is more of a pass/fail cutoff for joining. Those other areas are used to qualify you for your job aptitude. Sometimes it’s a combination of a minimum afqt and line scores to qualify for a job.
